Harmon MSN in Nursing Education Scholarship Policy

Purpose: The purpose of this policy to enhance the recruitment and retention of masters prepared nurse educators in the Greater Kansas City area through the funding of graduate study with an emphasis in the nurse educator role.

Eligibility: Individuals must hold a BSN and/or meet admission requirements for graduate study in a nationally accredited nursing program and have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or higher to be eligible to apply.
Scholarship Program Information: The Harmon MSN in Nursing Education Scholarship is available up to a maximum amount of $20,000. Recipient has up to five years to complete their MSN. The individual is required to commit two years of employment as a full-time or part time (at least 20 hours per week) faculty member in a College of Nursing at one of the 17 member schools of the Greater Kansas City Collegiate Nurse Educators following completion of MSN. If the individual does not complete the two-year work agreement, the individual will need to repay the loan amount that corresponds with the remaining years of work commitment.

Individuals will be expected to sign a promissory note for the funding and the funding will be considered taxable income.

Recipients will continue to receive funding if it is determined by The Research Foundation that satisfactory progress is evident. Individuals may request a one-year leave for extenuating circumstance based on approval by The Research Foundation. For individuals who choose part-time study, funding distribution will be based on total number of credits completed per semester including summer sessions.

The funding may be used for tuition and fees. There are no deadlines. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Applicant should apply for scholarship before beginning coursework.

Application Requirements:

  1. Completed Harmon Scholarship Application form.
  2. Essay: Select two topics from the four listed and respond with appropriate citations in an essay that should not exceed 300 words per questions (for a total of 600 words).
    • Identify and analyze current trends in nursing and higher education that will have an impact on your role as a faculty member.
    • Discuss the three most significant legislative and/or policy issues that have or will have an impact on the teaching-learning process
    • Describe the different generational characteristics and their relationship to the teaching-learning process.
    • What would you forecast as the most profound change yet to occur in the education/practice environment and your rationale for your selection of that factor?
  3. Letter of recommendation from your clinical supervisor in current place of employment; faculty member if one year post BSN; if you have done clinical or teaching, we would recommend letter from that employer. Please select an individual who can speak to your ability to be successful in graduate education and in the role of faculty member.
  4. Please complete the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Release and provide a signed copy to the person you select to provide your recommendation form.
  5. Submit Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  6. Submission of official transcript. Please submit transcripts of any and all undergraduate and postgraduate education.
