Finding Family at Research

"We spend so much time taking care of our community. What will we do if something happens to us? By donating to the ECHO Team, you are ensuring prompt, compassionate relief for yourself or a coworker if the unexpected happens."

For some, Research Medical Center is like a family. This employee has worked at Research for more than a decade. But her story at the hospital starts much earlier. She was born at Research; both her parents were nurses at the hospital; her grandmother was a CNA for 30 years; her uncle a pharmacist; one aunt worked in the lab; and another aunt is still employed. She grew up going to the chapel and even attending Royals games with other Research employees.

“We visited family working holidays, came for lunch, and walked the hallways when one of us was ill. The people at Research have supported our family in so many ways.”

As Research employees worked tirelessly to provide the best care for patients during the pandemic, this employee was unable to recognize her own medical needs.

“I knew I was tired, but I shrugged it off as something we all must be feeling. It was not until I started having uncontrolled pain that I knew something was really wrong.”

She needed emergency surgery. Recovery required six to eight weeks, which meant no work during that time.

“Like most of us, my family needed two incomes to survive. I had no idea how we were going to make it for that long. A colleague recommended the The Research Foundation’s Employee Assistance Fund. I initially felt guilty even considering it. I have never reached out for any financial assistance. But I gave it a try.”

After her application, the ECHO Team responded quickly. And just as she did growing up, this employee felt supported by Research.

“I’m eternally grateful for the support the ECHO Team provided. I feel like my family really showed up for me when I was in need. I have always donated to the Employee Assistance Fund, and now I am increasing my donation. We spend so much time taking care of our community. What will we do if something happens to us? By donating to the ECHO Team, you are ensuring prompt, compassionate relief for yourself or a coworker if the unexpected happens. You can make a difference in a co-worker’s life. Every bit counts.”
