A family dedicated to giving
Adrian and Margaret Harmon established the Tom Harmon Presidential Scholar Award through a charitable remainder trust they initiated with The Research Foundation in 1995. They wanted to honor their son, Tom, for his many years of service to Research Medical Center and Research College of Nursing.
Tom began his service to Research in 1978. He has served as an Advisory Director, Research Medical Center board member and chairman, and is
currently a member of both the Foundation Board of Directors and Research College of Nursing Governing Board.
“I believe nursing will be an increasingly important profession in the future. Our population is aging and we will be challenged to provide more care in
inner cities and rural America, requiring nurses to be better prepared to offer health care,” Tom Harmon said. “My family believes Research College of Nursing provides a great education. We established this scholarship to encourage outstanding students to pursue a BSN degree and a nursing profession.”
Adrian & Margaret were longtime supporters of the Foundation - both passed away in 2015. Under the terms of the charitable remainder trust they established, their gift can now be used to provide an annual academic scholarship for a student to attend Research College of Nursing. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates characteristics necessary to excel in the nursing profession. Beginning in 2016, the scholarship is a two-year award for juniors and seniors totaling $32,000.
