Financier and friend
For any organization, financial stability is important. But for a foundation that awards hundreds of thousands of dollars to students across the metro through scholarships, balancing the books is the key to success.
Enter Todd Bartels. Todd was born in Kansas City, Missouri at Research Hospital, grew up in Platte County and received an accounting degree from the University of Missouri. He worked for an accounting firm in Kansas City before returning to Mizzou for law school. After getting his law degree, Todd once again found his way back to Kansas City as a clerk for Senior U.S. District Judge Gary Fenner. He then began working for law offices that have merged with Polsinelli and has been with that firm as a business litigator and trial attorney since 1998. Most of his work errs on the side of finances. He handles shareholder disputes and bankruptcy litigation.
Todd’s connection with The Research Foundation began with Joe Groebl, Foundation board member and Advisory Director. Todd was looking for opportunities to become more involved with the Kansas City community. His longtime friend, Joe, told him about us.
“I went to an Advisory Director meeting to better understand the Foundation’s mission. I was extremely impressed with the organization, its people and its programming.”
He joined the Advisory Directors in July 2015.
After a year of membership, Todd was given the opportunity to further help the Foundation. He was approached to join the finance committee.
“When I became an Advisory Director, I tried to figure out ways my skill set would contribute. A position became available on the finance committee and I thought my accounting and law background would help,“ Todd said. “It was a readymade position and a no-brainer to accept.”
Todd was appointed to the finance committee in the summer of 2016.
He and his wife, Kim, who is also an attorney, have two young boys, Jacob and Luke, which makes his life at home busy. But Todd is still looking for ways to join forces with the Foundation’s programming.
“I want to better know the people involved and try and expand on my contributions.”
Todd is a savvy lawyer with a deep understanding of finance. It isn’t surprising that only a year after joining the Advisory Directors; he has expanded his role with the Foundation. As he enters the early stages of involvement, we are excited to discover what he will bring to the table.
