Thousands of dollars raised to honor legacy of Research College of Nursing president
KANSAS CITY, Mo., (Apr. 25, 2017) - Dr. Nancy O. DeBasio, Research College of Nursing president, is retiring after three decades of service to the college.
Dr. DeBasio served Research College of Nursing from 1988-2017, including more than two decades as president and dean. She will also end her 21-year term as a board member of The Research Foundation in May.
Friends, family and colleagues celebrated Dr. DeBasio’s retirement April 13 at Webster House. Members of the Research College of Nursing Governing Board, fellow Research College of Nursing faculty members, Research Medical Center colleagues and Dr. DeBasio’s children spoke at the celebration. Cynthia Randazzo, The Research Foundation president and CEO, announced the establishment of the Dr. Nancy O. DeBasio Faculty Leadership Award. The award was a surprise for Dr. DeBasio coordinated by The Research Foundation, the Research College of Nursing Governing Board and Research College of Nursing faculty.
"When we learned Nancy was retiring, the Research College of Nursing Governing Board formed a committee to plan her retirement celebration. We decided we wanted to do something very special and lasting to honor Nancy's commitment to nursing and her high regard for nursing faculty," Randazzo said.
In honor of her dedication to the college, The Research Foundation was able to raise nearly $65,000. These funds will be used to support the Research College of Nursing faculty members who receive the Dr. Nancy O. DeBasio Faculty Leadership Award and are carrying her legacy forward. The award will be annually given to a faculty member who exhibit self-awareness, ingenuity, love and heroism, all traits Dr. DeBasio exemplified during her time at the college.
